The Frottoir
(Zydeco Rubboard)

  Zydeco T Carrier
MOJO & The Bayou Gypsies'
legendary player of the Frottoir!

The Frottoir (Zydeco Rubboard) is unique to Zydeco music, and is one of only four musical instruments invented in America.*

The King of Zydeco, Mr. Clifton Chenier, invented this instrument in the 1940s while working at an oil refinery in Port Arthur, TX.  Mr. Clifton sought out the services of a fellow Louisianian working at the refinery, Mr. Willie Landry (a Cajun from Leroy, LA), to actually make the first Frottoir.

Together, these two families quietly shared this historic story until 2002, when the Smithsonian inducted the Frottoir into the Museum of North American History.

Please enjoy the story of the Smithsonian's Frottoir acquisition, the video story of the first Frottoir, and learn to play the Frottoir, an American Icon.
